Monthly Thought

November 2007

When I was younger I used to go to a lot of archery competitions, and my dad would always come with me and watch. He's very old, and therefore wise. He was full of little sayings too, but one has stuck with me more than others. So much so, that when I went to two University national competitions I shared it with my teams there and we came second both times, which at nationals isn't too bad! Anyway, the saying goes:

"If you keep your head when everyone else loses theirs, you'll be the tallest person in the room." And by that he meant that if something went wrong when I was competing, not to worry about it and concentrate on the next shot. I think that as Christians we can get bogged down in something we've done wrong recently, or something not so recent. I, certainly, have got myself all caught up in stuff I've done wrong for ages and it doesn't help anyone when you do that. Some things can make you worry, some upset, some nervous, some... the list goes on.

There was a chap in the Bible who was a king, so he had enough stuff to worry about running a kingdom. This king was called Nebuchadnezzar, and at one point he said "I, Nebuchadnezzar, raised my eyes toward heaven, and my sanity was restored." (Dan 4:34) So see even kings struggle with stuff, obviously, and so do I at times, and I would think that there are others out there somewhere that occasionally struggle too.

If you have something you are struggling with ever you can always look to God for, just like Nebuchadnezzar, but that doesn't mean all your problems are going to disappear straight away, but if you ask God to help you He knows the situation better than you and He can help you through it. The bible calls him "Wonderful Counselor", and not that you need to lie on half a sofa and pay Him a fortune to listen to you tell Him all your problems, whilst He says: "Mmmm...", but He's the perfect person to comfort you and help you work through stuff. Especially for those people out there who are worried about getting sorted for Christmas, some others with exams looming just into the new year, or anything else, you don't need to plough into these things alone, just lift your eyes to the Lord, and He will help you through it.
