"You have given me greater joy than those who have abundant harvests
of grain and wine." (Psalm 4 v 7)
The study guide in my bible is very clever. It makes an excellent
point from the above verse that I'm going to share with you right
now...
The guy who wrote this verse is drawing a line between the two
types of joy. Inward joy which comes from
knowing and trusting in God, versus happiness
which comes from pleasant surroundings.
This guy didn't have all of the great material things that people
around him had, yet he had a "greater joy." How so?!
Inward joy is steady as long as we trust in God. Happiness is
unpredictable, and often based on things, people or circumstances
around us that we can't control.
Inward joy, the constant certainty of knowing and following
God, defeats discouragement. Happiness just covers it up.
Inward joy is God given and lasting (eternal). Happiness is
temporary and often shattered.
Following God isn't always easy or full of pleasant circumstances,
but, even in the hard times, it's definitely the most rewarding
and joy filled life you can live. Think about it, what do you
really want?
