Monthly Thought
July 2006
Recently, I was browsing through a book called 'A Box of Delights',
which has been compiled by J John & Mark Stribe. It really made me
sit up and think when I read some of the comments written in the
book about the bible. These were:
"You Christians look after a document containing enough dynamite
to blow all civilisation to pieces, turn the world upside down, and
bring peace to a battle-torn planet. But you treat it as though it
is nothing more than a piece of literature."
"Dusty Bibles make for dirty lives."
Do we believe in the power of God's word? Hebrews 4:12a says,
"For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any
doubled-edged sword..."
How do we treat the bible? Do we read it as God's inspired word, or
as a piece of literature? 2 Timothy 3:16-17 says,
"All Scripture is God-breathed and is useful for teaching,
rebuking, correcting and training in righteousness, so that we may
be thoroughly equipped for every good work."
"The Bible contains the vitamins for the soul."
There was an old song that I use to sing in Sunday School. It said
this: "Read your bible, pray everyday, if you want to grow." I know
that in order to be effective for God I need to spend much more
time in God's word, and allow God to have His way in my life.
As well as using daily bible notes, another way we can learn about
God is through subscribing by email to Word on the Web. They send
you a short passage from the Bible together with notes to help you
understand it, by email everyday. No cost is involved, and it's a
great way to learn about God's truths. Further details can be
