Leaders

Introduction

YCYH is a voluntary organisation that relies heavily upon the dedication of a huge team of leaders to make this ministry possible. Although there is a leadership group, who along with the trustees oversee the organisation, primarily this is a team ministry where people with a variety of gifts, abilities and experiences are encouraged to use them, while allowing others opportunities to develop. We have over 60 leaders, all of whom who have different roles and responsibilities within the organisation.

As our work continues to grow, we need people who have:

  • A clear Christian commitment
  • Passion to work with children/young people, ensuring that their welfare is paramount
  • Commitment to treat all children/young people as individuals and with equal concern
  • An ability to work with children/young people or a willingness to learn
  • Capacity to work as part of a team under leadership and supervision
  • A sense of humour

Although many of our leaders are experienced, there are plenty of opportunities for those with little or no experience to be involved, as training is provided. Direct responsibility for organising or supervising activities, is only given to those with suitable gifts and the right experience. There are opportunities to be team leaders or caterers. Leaders can be any age from 19 years upwards. All leaders will have to undertake appropriate checks through the Criminal Records Bureau (CRB), and will be expected to agree to, and work in accordance with our Child Protection Policy, before they can be involved. We would love to hear from anybody who is interested in joining this exciting ministry.

Leaders Forms

All new leaders, or those who are volunteering after a break of one year or more, or who are due for a renewal (i.e. every 3 years) are asked to complete a Leaders Application Form. They also need to obtain two references, one being from a church leader.

Those leaders who served as a volunteer last year, and are not due for a renewal (i.e. every 3 years) must complete a Leaders Update Form, including obtaining one reference from a church leader.

Criminal Record Bureau (CRB)

All new leaders, as well as existing leaders who are due for a renewal (i.e. every 3 years) must apply for an Enhanced disclosure through the CRB. Because the position of being a leader involves substantial contact with children, this check will reveal any details of cautions, reprimands or final warnings, as well as formal convictions.

It must be stressed that a criminal record will not necessarily be a bar to appointment as a leader, only if the nature of any matters revealed could be considered to place children/young people at risk. Any applicant who has ever been convicted over acts of violence or sexual offences against children or adults will not be appointed.

All people applying to be leaders will be treated fairly, including those who have a criminal record, and we will not discriminate against any person on the basis of information revealed. Further information on the appointment of leaders can be found in our Child Protection Policy, which is registered with the Churches Child Protection Advisory Service (CCPAS). People can be assured of complete confidentiality, correct handling and safekeeping of any disclosure information.

Child Protection

YCYH is a non-denominational independent organisation primarily run by a group of Christians from churches around the York area. Although some churches/organisations may have their own child protection policy and procedures, whilst leaders are working for YCYH, our policy will take precedence. We have a comprehensive policy, part of which includes; definitions of abuse, recognising & responding to abuse, appointment of leaders, behaviour, guidelines on touching, and practice guidelines (e.g. fire safety, kitchen & food hygiene, first aid etc).

Training

In order to be effective in supporting, supervising and sharing our faith when working with young people, we need to ensure that all leaders are equipped to do the work that God wants us to do. As part of our training program we hold informal workshops including; leading small groups in bible study, praying/counselling with young people, and kitchen food safety & hygiene policy. All leaders also receive training along with receiving a copy of our Child Protection Policy, so that they understand and agree to it before working with young people. No leader is given specific responsibilities, without receiving adequate training appropriate to the role they are taking.

We also provide opportunities for leaders to receive First Aid Courses & Basic Food Hygiene Courses. These costs are paid for by YCYH.
